When it was first settled in 1762, Blue Hill's economy was centered on shipbuilding and trading by sea. The Town was incorporated January 30, 1789.  Today, the town is known for culture with its fine library, Kneisel Hall chamber music, many artists and galleries, and more.  Blue Hill has a semi-public high school, an alternative high school, a public elementary school, and a Waldorf-inspired elementary school.  The Hancock County Agricultureal Society, established in 1891, sponsors the annual Blue Hill Fair- "a down to earth country fair"- held Labor Day weekend.  Blue Hill Mountain overlooks the town, and its pathways are well-used by residents and visitors.As of the last census taken in 2000, the population is 2390.  The Municipality has a Town Meeting form of Government with a three member Board of Selectmen.  The local elections are held the 3rd Friday in March, with the Annual Town Meeting held the 3rd Saturday in March.
